Buchzusammenfassung:
Examines Jewish self-help in Germany between 1933-43, dividing the activities into three phases: 1933-38, 1938-41, and 1941-43. A certain amount of autonomy which was present in Jewish establishments in the first phase disappeared after the Kristallnacht pogrom Jewish aid was then interrupted due to the arrest of most of the Jewish men. Afterwards, the main focus was on help toward emigration. From 1941 Jews were forced to participate in their own annihilation. Womens self-help in 1933-38 was represented mainly by the Jüdische Frauenbund, which focused on social work, education, and professional training or retraining in order to improve chances for womens emigration. Despite the disintegration of the organization in 1939, some former members continued to give assistance in emigration mentions, among others, Hannah Karminski, Cora Berliner, Recha Freier, and Martha Mosse. Although women gained in importance and outnumbered men in the aid organizations, only Mosse had a leading position within the Jewish community. Nevertheless, the womens self-assertion under threat and persecution was outstanding.
